It really is such a weird thing, the DSM. The older I get the more I realize how incompetent everyone is, and the DSM seems -- even though it's apparently based on studies-- a true "throw the spaghetti at the wall" type thing.

And I think you should get started, and write about it! I didn't have the bandwidth to do a huge deep dive beyond what's in that one paragraph, but I would love to read more about it, by someone who is a better writer than those folks at the NIH.
